Fiji is a dreamscape, filled with lush, tropical rainforest rolling over the hillsides to the edges of secluded beaches and indigo waters. Rivers course through the trees trickling into waterfalls. When you arrive at Nadi International Airport, you find yourself on the largest island in the Fijian archipelago, Viti Levu. Mount Tomanivi watches over the island at 4,344 feet above sea level.

After your meal, you meet your guide and venture off Davui to the visible shores of Beqa Island, which stands less than five miles south of Viti Levu. The island’s rugged interior slopes abruptly into the cavernous shoreline. The hiking trails across Beqa have connected the villages around the island for centuries. You step underneath the jungle canopy and into the meandering foothills around Ulnkoro Mountain, the highest point on the island standing 1,500 feet above sea level. Patches of sweet potato, pineapple, and cassava speckle the pathway.
The perfumed aroma of tropical flowers emanates from the underbrush. The trail eventually leads you to a marvellous spring careening into a natural waterfall. The water beads down the cliff like a curtain rippling the turquoise pool below. The rocks have smoothed with time. The water is cold against your skin but refreshing underneath the afternoon sun. If you continue to the top of Ulnkoro Mountain, you find the spectacular view of Beqa Island’s coast, lined with a protective reef and the pure horizon in the distance.

Nudibranch, which look like a subaquatic caterpillar, are known for their exquisite colors and unearthly shapes; they can grow to over 23 inches in length but average of 12 inches. The coral glosses as brilliantly as the marine life, showing their true colours underneath the shine of your flashlight. When your return to shore, you can’t help but recall the sensational life thriving in the temperate waters so close to your luxurious private resort.
In the calm rush of the water against the shore, and the bristling of the leaves against one another in the breeze, the aroma of breakfast drifts across the open restaurant. Few things are more luxurious than the flavours of a traditional dish prepared by someone with a deep connection to what they have created. Today, you meet your guide in the kitchen where the succulent aroma of coconut oil fills the room. You will learn about the fresh ingredients and preparation needed to create a number of island delicacies. Although you can’t take the dishes home with you, you can take the recipes.
An abundance of produce decorates the counter in a rainbow of natural colours. The chef pulls out a large mahimahi caught fresh that morning. You follow along after the chef instructs you, dicing onions and mincing red chilies, chopping tomatoes, and stemming coriander. You develop rich flavours with a coconut milk-based sauce known as lolo. The chef is friendly, always speaking with a smile, eager to make sure you understand each ingredient before continuing with the demonstration. After all the ingredients are mixed, you can dig into the Kokoda, a traditional Fijian ceviche, and taste the layers of citrus, earthiness, brininess, and richness with every bite.
Today, the island and its surrounding grandeur are yours to indulge in at your whim and pleasure. Dig your toes into the warm, white powdery sand and let the water lap at your feet. You can journey around the azure water on a kayak to enjoy a panorama of the islands on your own time. You step aboard a sturdy wooden platform facing the first of 10 lines spanning almost a mile long. Some lines can take you as far as 512 feet long, flying over fast, flowing rivers and past vivacious tropical birds. You can feel your heart thumping in your chest before jumping from the platform and zooming across the canopy. The view of the surrounding greenery rushes by, and the wind bristles your cheeks.
